The Decade: DJ Emskee

by DJ Emskee

DJ Emskee has been keeping listeners of Brooklyn Radio in the real with his Controlled Substance hip-hop show since we started this ridiculous venture. Having taken a break from the DJ game for a bit, 2010 will see Em becoming more eclectic on his show here, as well as keeping with his roots on the forever running Underground Railroad on WBAI, and growing his own production skills. As an MC with a lot on his mind, you can bet he has some interesting things to say about the last decade.

DJ Emskee's heated Controlled Substance hip-hop show is taking a momentary turn to the live variety. If you've been in tune with this show since its start over two years ago, you've known that unadulterated, raw authentic hip-hop--along with intelligent viewpoints--has been the standard. Since new shows of that type are on a hiatus at the moment, Emskee will showcase some of his live recorded performances from gigs over the years, most notably product from his "Make Love, Not War" party at the legendary and now defunct Black Betty in Williamsburg, Brooklyn. Emskee is no doubt one of New York City's best DJs [Ed. Note - The views and opinions expressed by the omnipresent DJ Emskee are solely his, and his alone. BrooklynRadio.net does not take responsibilty for any of the blog beef or head exploding his remarks might stir up in the bowels of the Internet.] and comes from the generation where the selectors had to come with pure skills AND nuff RECORDS...not pre-determined computer playlists and a barrage of mp3s. Until Emskee gets back to ripping the real on the hip-hop tip, enjoy other live music stylings. Sincerely, Your girlfriend's secret favorite DJ. Em.

by BK Staff

DJ Emskee's new installment of Controlled Substance is entitled the "Bailout Banger". Em kills it yet again this week with an infectious blend of authentic hip-hop, featuring new joints from Krumbsnatcha (produced by Large Professor), Little Brother, Tha Connection, Deams (from Amsterdam) feat. Big Daddy Kane, Brooklyn's own Iron Lyon, Q Unique, the V.O.T.S, and of course joints from Emskee himself. Learn to control your music substance with this thorough show.

Best of 2008: DJ Emskee

by DJ Emskee

We didn't think you needed another "Best Records of the Year" according to us list. Instead, we asked our DJs, writers, friends, and a few homicidal maniacs the same questions about 2008 to see how they would respond.

After the cut, DJ Emskee of Controlled Substance is making big moves in 2009. Watch out now!

If this is your first time, welcome. If you already know what to expect, glad you're back for more.

This "Great Energy" Controlled Substance episode features new QUALITY hip-hop music from Brother Ali, NYC veteran Q Unique, slammin joints from Cymarshall Law, Blame One & Exile feat. Sean Price, and joints from host Emskee himself. This show is not about TRENDY hip-hop music, yet the idea of solid, credible individual creativity and expression that many times is absent from your mainstream or "easily accessible" so-called hip-hop outlets.

There are soundbytes from the great Harry Belafonte on Barak Obama and the world status, as well as Tommy Chong of Cheech and Chong, who was sadly "trapped" by the DEA and locked up for 9 months for selling bongs on the internet. This episode, and the show in general, aim to give the listener music and information to take away from it other than just bravado, swagger, and more expletives that don't progress the culture, and challenges parametered ways of thinking. Thanks for listening. Peace.

Emskeeology

by DJ Emskee

Peace y’all. It’s DJ Emskee of the “Controlled Substance” show-here on brooklynradio.net!-to get you in on some QUALITY hip-hop music that the major labels have mostly ignored. For the record, hip-hop is a culture. As the incomparable KRS One has said, “Rap is something you do…Hip-hop is something you live.” Through frequent misrepresentation, the music has been unfairly characterized by many as materialistic, violent, and sexist. There’s absolutely nothing wrong with flossing, as it’s human nature to aspire to be and show that we’re better than we were yesterday. However, when it becomes the focus of most to all the major releases in the genre, the general idea to someone who doesn’t know what hip-hop is, is heavily diluted with one dimensional thinking and negative generalizations. All of Em’s good records after the jump.
