Live @ Blackbird

by Tony Conquerrah

Yesssire... Got a little something different this week. A lot more eclectic than usual, as this was recorded from last Saturday's set at Blackbird Parlour, a delightful rustic cafe turned culturally enlightened watering hole located out in Williamsburg. I'll explain more after the cut.

Dub has reached new heights of popularity in the past few years thanks to a dubstep craze that's sweeping the globe, as well as the rub-a-dub laced sounds and punky dancehall styles of popular female artists such as M.I.A and Santigold. But the pioneers and originators of these "new" aesthetics have received little hype--until now.

On a new vinyl 45, Subatomic Sound System, the NYC-based label and sound system that is a cornerstone of modern day dub and reggae music production, brings together two of the craziest, most colorful, and most radical characters in the history of the movement: NOW for the first time EVER together on record Lee “Scratch” Perry, '70s Jamaican dub originator, and Ari Up of The Slits, '70s punky reggae innovator and founder of the first all-female punk band in the UK.

The combination is dynamite! The track names say it all: "Hello, Hell is Very Low" and "Bed Athletes". Scratch & Ari deliver classic takes in their signature styles, a clever lyrical balance that juxtaposes conscious culture and spirituality with humor and wordplay.

Download an exclusive radio edit of "Bed Athletes" from the player below...

Mash up Bass

by Darkat

HeartCentric studios is a community minded art space in Novato, California. It is spearheaded by Samirah and Michael Gushard of LotusTribe fame. I had the pleasure to drop some bass at their recent party to christen their space. Unlike most of my mixes, this one is not with vinyl but is instead done entirely in ableton live, and features all darkat mash-ups and remixes. Give it a listen.

AS you can see in the video above, the U.S. Navy tested a new lazer the other day that can shoot down a drone in mid-flight. If you think you saw this before, it may be because it was actually filmed decades ago and aired as video of a UFO crash landing in the ocean. It is great to see that in these difficult fiscal times, the government is finding creative ways to reduce spending.

In the meantime, on Subatomic Sound Radio we are using lazers to destroy the sun (in hopes of cooling down NYC streets) thanks to the help of new bass driven rhythms from Dub Gabriel, Kush Arora, Process Rebel, Liondub/Jahdan/Noah D and more.  'Nuff live dubbing and insightful commentary from your fearless selector Emch as he guides you through a collision course of dubstep, heavy bass, roots, dancehall, and Brazilian tropical vibes (courtesy of Man Recordings).

Magical Bass Episode #5, featuring Danny Elfman, Drop The Lime, Dead Prez, Th' Mole and more, is something completely different. It's a radio play mystery loosely based on DJ 0.000001's recent relationship problems. Both beat junkies and anyone who's ever suffered a broken heart might find something special in Magical Bass Episode 5: The Case of the Missing Magic.

On this episode of Subatomic Sound Radio, we have the man called Devon D, a driving force in the music industry in Jamaica for decades. Starting as an artist he went on to found People Records and released chart topping 45s during the 80s and 90s from artists like Dennis Brown, Ken Boothe, & Beenie Man.  Finally he got into event production, video, film, and even writing and producing plays, penning and producing the hit "Brother Desmond".

He appeared on Summerstage last year, doing a cameo with Lee Scratch Perry & Dubblestandart. He kicks off the show with a wicked freestyle over a new release coming out in collaboratoin with his label and Subatomic Sound that features Elephant Man,"Vampires & Informers" over a riddim by Dubblestandart. I thought U-Roy was up in the studio when I heard Devon D hit the mic! Tune in. You are in for a treat.

In the second half of the show, we tip our hat to the LAMC (Latin Alternative Music Conference) with a ton of new Brazilian and other South American electronic vibes.

You think it's hot in NYC this week? Check out the new video for the Subatomic Sound System remix of "Chrome Optimism," a track that brings together Vienna's dub masters Dubblestandart with iconic American filmmaker David Lynch (doing spoken word about transcendental meditation), Jamaican dub inventor Lee "Scratch" Perry (talking about the heights of heaven and the depths of hell), and famed French electronic composer Jean Michel Jarre. The video was shot in the dusty desert of Death Valley and around asphalt wastelands of Los Angeles by Tokiori.

Subatomic Sound, the label behind the Brooklyn Radio show of the same name, dropped this vinyl exclusive last week in Europe.  It finally made it's way to stores in the U.S. and Japan this week.  New Yorkers, check for it at Halcyon in Brooklyn or get it throughout the US on the web from Zion's Gate and Ernie B.

On "Chrome Optimism", the iconic American filmmaker David Lynch and legendary Jamaican dub inventor Lee Scratch Perry appear in a summit of eccentric genius.  Top ranking European dub outfit, Dubblestandart, provided the dubby musical foundation.  Also, featured are excerpts from French electronic music pioneer Jean Michel Jarre's famous 70's composition Oxygene part 4 and dubstep and dub remixes from Bristol's RSD and NYC's Subatomic Sound System.

Deadly Funny

by Emch

It's getting hot and sticky in NYC and breathing in this thick, humid air can start to feel a little bit like you are inside the iron lung. Don't worry, we've got a soundtrack for that! It all happens to synchronize nicely with a hot and heavy new release from the Subatomic Sound label: Dubblestandart meets David Lynch & Lee Scratch Perry "Chrome Optimism." Yes the American fillmaker and Jamaican dub inventor together on wax. It's a limited edition vinyl-only release that is already sold out of many stores, but fortunately for you, you can tune in digitally to some selections right here on Subatomic Sound Radio.

This edition of Subatomic Sound Radio features two tunes off the "Chrome Optimism" record that focus on the madness of dub innovator Lee Scratch Perry. "Deadly Funny" is an intergalactic time travel trip back in time to the Black Ark in Jamaica during the '70s via a futuristc Subatomic space ship and "I Do Voodoo" remixed by RSD in his extra heavy Bristol style. We've also got some other great unreleasesd exclusives from RSD on the show plus fresh cuts from the latest releases by Breakage w/Roots Manuva, Fort Knox Five, Quantic, and Nas & Damian Marley. Tune in!

On the topic of gangsters and politicians, the latest edition of Subatomic Sound Radio features an exclusive track "Vampires & Informers" by Jamaican dancehall king Elephant Man and Vienna's dub masters, Dubblestandart. It is forthcoming on a  Subatomic Sound release next month, but current events called for putting it on the airwaves now. Allow me to expalin, after the cut.

If you have been watching the news you may have caught the story of riots and raids in Jamaica stemming from the U.S. demands for extradition of Dudus, one of Jamaica's top dons controlling the Tivoli Gardens area in Kingston. He's been brought up on charges of guns, drugs, and conspiracy. Not coincidentally, this neighborhood is the main constituency of the current prime minister, Bruce Golding, who is now leading the siege on a man many call "the President" and consider to be the reason Golding is in office. For more on the story in Jamaica, check this synopsis. And here is a fascinating video on the history of between the U.S., former JA Prime Minister, and Dudus' father known as the "don of dons" and "Jim Brown".

Also on the show, tons of bass heavy reggae, dub, tropical, dubstep, and more. We are debuting new tracks from the Chrome Optimism 12" with David Lynch & Lee Scratch Perry, Matt Shadetek's new album, my favorite tune from "Distant Relatives" (the new Nas & Damian Marley collaboration), tracks from the new Marcus Visionary double album, the new Quantic dub meets cumbia album, and smashers from Kanka, Jahtari and more. Get in there and listen!

Back At You

by Emch

Oops. We dropped a new Subatomic Sound Radio show the other day called "Back At You" and neglected to tell you about it. Lots of unlikely combinations and new releases on the dubstep, UK funky, and electronic dub fronts. We've got new Breakage, including his collab with Burial  and with Caspa, and David Rodigan (!?). Also debuting new sounds from a collaborative limited edition vinyl 12" put out on the Subatomic Sound label called "Dubblestandart meets David Lynch & Lee 'Scratch' Perry" (talk about an unlikely combination) with an exclusive remix of the track "Chrome Optimism" from Subatomic Sound System. Also, last week saw the release of the "Carib" double album from Marcus Visionary on Liondub Internationl. Marcus' EPs leading up to this full length release of jungle, dubstep, UK funky, and dub were topping charts in the UK, and you will hear most certainly why.

This Friday  at Southpaw in Brooklyn, Liondub International and Konkrete Jungle Outernational present the Third installment of their already infamous TWO SOUNDS CLASH parties. As always it will feature two floors of serious bass heavy sound: one electronic oriented floor showcasing jungle, dubstep, and beyond versus one floor with classic reggae and dancehall. This event brings in some heavyweight talent from across the world to celebrate the release of Marcus Visionary's first full length CARIB LP on the Liondub International imprint, which officialy dropped at all major digital retailers on May 2nd. Singles off the CARIB LP have garnered support from heavyweight DJs like Rusko, Annie Nightingale, MJ Cole, Benny Page, Shy Fx and Mistajam--just to name a few. The album is focused on Marcus' genre defying 140 bpm sounds that he has developed over the past 3 years, but you can also expect a full audio assault of dubstep and jungle from him as well.

For a preview of the party vibes and the new Marcus Visionary release, tune into the latest edition of Emch's Subatomic Sound Radio show here on Brooklyn Radio.
