The Rub - Flashing Lights 5

by BK Staff

Along with residents Nick Catchdubs and Jubilee, DJ Ayres of The Rub gets the clurrrb pop pop poppin' tonight in Chinatown at the monthly electronic dance excursion that is Flashing Lights. (You can RSVP here.) Joining them on the decks this cold January evening is Dave Nada, a.k.a Nadastrom of Dubsided Records and birthday boy Proper Villains of Nightshifters. And! To get you ready for the festivities, Jubilee, Dubs, and Ayres have prepared a mix of goodies. Perfect for your Friday happy hour--which, for us, is getting ready to start in...oh...20 minutes--with this nipper of Jack we have in our drawer. Long week shoveling the coal into the fire for the stacks, kids.

Check out an interview with Jubilee in New York Magazine about the night.

To Do: Flashing Lights

by DJ Ayres

First off, RIP to DJ AM. Thoughts from A-Trak, Eli Escobar, Diplo, ?uestlove, Nick Catchdubs, Primo, Stretch Armstrong, Matt Colon, Roctakon, Pase Rock and me at the Village Voice. And here's a really good post from one of AM's partners and closest friends, Mike B.

Secondly, hi! I'm back from Hawaii with a camoflage sunburn, ready to throw down this weekend at Flashing Lights and The Rub. We've got special guest DJ Sammy Bananas at Flashing Lights on Friday at a new spot in Williamsburg. We're giving away some free tickets at Flavorpill, go get em. As for The Rub, we've got Rok One playing with us on Saturday, and as much as I love his DJing, I also have to point out that he is the king of promo emails. So I'm just going to steal from Rok's email and give you a little taste: "That is correct. This weekend, I am deeply honored to be joining my heroes AYRES, COSMO BAKER & DJ ELEVEN, at their 7 years and still running strong monthly THE RUB - hands down the best Hip-Hop party in NYC. When I first started playing out around town, these 3 guys were at the top of my list of DJs that I wanted to earn respect from, and now that I finally have it, I will not let them down. So come Saturday, I'm not just simply "going in", I will be GOING IN, THROUGH and OUT THE OTHER SIDE. Then maybe AROUND and BACK IN AGAIN. Expect lots of surprises, and things that you haven't heard in a minute. This is serious bidness, let's GO!" - Rok (Sign up for his email blast by emailing rokone@gmail.com. It's like Christmas in your mailbox every time!)

[Ed. Note - More info on all this weekends' parties with The Rub is available at their site, itstherub.com.]

Party Alert: Wild Style

by DJ Ayres

It's amazing to reflect on starting out in NYC as a music fan ten years ago, then thinking about all the great times and, well, the career that enthusiasm lead me to. I usually take it in in stride but today I'm really excited because The Rub will be DJing at a party tonight with a bunch of the people who literally invented hip-hop thirty years ago. F*&^ it, I'm going to do some name dropping: Busy Bee, Grand Master Caz, Grand Wizard Theodore, Double Trouble, and Kevie Kev! It is the Wildstyle 25th Anniversary party, and if you can make it out tonight, I highly recommend this jam. Then tommorow night is Flashing Lights, with the finest in house, techno, dubstep and disco mixed by XXXChange (producer for Spank Rock & Kid Sister among others), Matt Cee, Jubilee, Catchdubs and me. It's also the release party for my new EP with Matty Cee, Quarter Water! More info after the jump...
