Hello BK Radio fans - thank you to everyone who came to check me out last night at Brooklyn Bridge Park before the movie. This Saturday, September 5, I will be spinning at Blackbird Parlour out in Williamsburg. This is my new bi-weekly residence and it's turning out to be a lot of fun. All my Brooklyn heads, if you're in the area, come through - you won't regret it. Check out Blackbird's website for more info about the place, and do remember, you can fan me on Facebook for details on all my events.
We've been loving everything on Big Boi's new album Sir Luscious Leftfoot. We're curious as to why it's getting no love from radio around these parts, being that it cracks harder and has catchier hooks, rhymes, and flows more futuristic than anything Drake or Nicki Minaj have put out. Their shit is lightweight. But the Lord works in mysterious ways, doesn't he! Here's another great track, "You Ain't No DJ." Do the shutterbug to it. [XXL]
DJ Wait What mixes hip-hop vocals over indie and commercial rock beats. The results are rather delicious. Grab the entire album after the cut. [Wait What]
Another live set this week on Wake The Town, this time coming from Loki Lounge out in Park Slope, Brooklyn. This month marks one year that I've been a regular DJ at this spot, and I must say it's been a lot of fun... More after the jump.
From Max Tenone, the man who brought us that amazing remix album of Mos Def rapping over classic dub reggae, Mos Dub, we get the second half of Black Star with Dub Kweli. Professionally done. You can download the whole album after the cut. Perfect for your Monday morning blues.
Who say's rappers aren't humanitarians? Cam'ron is hoping to track down the homeless man responsible for this fly ass hook that he sampled for his new track "Ya Momma On Ya" featuring Snoop Dogg and Jim Jones. Cam wants to hook Red up with some cash, and put his face up in the video. Applaud him.

Autodiddy! Puff's protégé duo Dawn Richards and Kalenna of his group Dirty Money put some nice backing on this new R&B joint, "Loving You No More." But, um, the autotune is waaaaay over the top. These girls have nice vocals, why turn them into robots if you don't have to? Mediocre man of the moment Drake features on a verse.
You can download it at The Smoking Section. [Smoking Section]
Today's Fresh Cut comes to us from DJ Ayres of The Rub, who is detonatoning dancefloors in Canada with his other half, Cosmo Baker. We got this telecominique via Blackberry that the L.A. producer's Them Jeans remix of Kid Cudi's "Pursuit of Happiness" is causing earth shifting tectonics with the Canucks. It will probably work wonders for your playlist as well. Impress your friends!
This episode really sets the table for the next two episodes on the DJ, which will debut further along in the series. It explains the beginnings of some of the gang violence that changed the course of how Atlanta hip-hop culture evolved. The origins of Down By Law are discussed as well, as its impact on what was at one time a vibrant breakdancing and club scene.
Stories heard from: Tony MF Rock aka Woodchuck, DJ Applejac, Brian Lassiter, DJ Powerlord, H2O & DJ Jelly.
Kanye West makes his money and buys rare credenzas from around the world by selling kids self-aggrandizing melodramatic bullshit raps. In the video above, we see what his tunes are actually used for amongst his constituency: Drinking games with the bros! This was done by rising YouTube star and Guitar Hero champion Freddie Wong.
Yesssire... Got a little something different this week. A lot more eclectic than usual, as this was recorded from last Saturday's set at Blackbird Parlour, a delightful rustic cafe turned culturally enlightened watering hole located out in Williamsburg. I'll explain more after the cut.
Feeling Black Milk with the sweet soul samples running behind his rhymes. Here he gets some guest help from Royce Da 5'9 and Elzhi for the track "Deadly Melody." His LP Album of the Year is due out September 14th. [Nah Right]
Today we told you about Lauryn Hill returning from the Sea of Crazy to give a moving performance at this weekend's Rock the Bells concert in California. For our Throwback Classic, we're dialing up her soulful "Ex-Factor" from Miseducation. For so long, Ms. Hill, we kept coming back into your arms, only to be disappointed. But this time, I think we've finally found each other at the right time. Let's go to an exotic island in the tropics, smoke a big ass Bob Marley joint, and make love until I'm kidnapped by rebel insurgents.
We've been noticing a lot of mash-ups on the webernets again lately. This combo of two American outlaws, Johnny Cash and Eazy-E, is rather inspired. DJ Topcat, who is responsible for other quality remix work, loops up "Folsom Prison Blues," pops a hip-hop beat on top, and gives Eazy the mic for the first verse.

Former Fugee Lauryn Hill, who went swimming in the Sea of Crazy after her successful solo album, The Miseducation of Lauryn Hill, appeared back in Normal Town at Rock the Bells this past weekend in California. No longer brandishing an acoustic guitar and sing ranting, she played an upbeat set of Fugee classics and her album.
Soulstatic gets ready for his gig under the stars tonight at Brooklyn Bridge Park, for the screening of the movie Blues Brothers, with some classic soul. This episode of The Dope Spot is a 2 hour power punch, featuring Motown, Stax, Atlantic Records and James Brown in the first hour, followed by a mix of new joints and some '80s guilty pleasure pop in the second.
Beloved record store Fat Beats is closing its brick and mortor stores in New York and Los Angeles, reports XXLMag.com. The store's president, Joe Abajian, was quoted as saying, “We’re proud of our legacy and will continue to re-invent ourselves. For now, we’ll see you online at FatBeats.com.” [Birthplace Magazine]
Hip-hop producer and rapper Jake 1 worked at a courthouse in Seattle during the day and produced beats by night. After signing with G-Unit, he went on to release his highly slept on 2008 LP, White Van Music. He sat down with the fellas at Grind City Radio recently and talked about his music and hip-hop in general.
Earlier today, we added an arcade page of cool internet games for you to play while you listen. In today's Throwback Classic, we pay tribute to one of the most famous video game tunes of all time, mixed with some hip-hop and shouts to Brooklyn. Cocoa Brovaz got in trouble for using the Super Mario Bros. sample, but the song has become a cult hit and remains in the hip-hop rotation of many a DJ. Super Brooklyn, let's gooooo!
