Subatomic Sound Radio is back and Emch has a new mix to keep your heart pumpin' and bass bins bumpin'. Exclusive bass heavy bangers from Stereotyp's forthcoming album. The special feature this time around is the debut of the new "Bed Athletes" track from a new 7" vinyl by Subatomic Sound System featuring Lee Scratch Perry & Ari Up of the Slits. This record is the first time ever that the Jamaican dub originator and UK punk reggae pioneer have ever appeared on together on record!
Like the tune? Want to own a piece of music history? Scoop it at Ernie B's in the U.S. or Juno in the U.K. You non-vinyl people can also grab a free download of the "Bed Athletes" radio edit that doesn't appear on the record, right here.
This Throwback Classic is perfect for the NYC heatwave. At the height of their international popularity in 1982, reggae supergroup Black Uhuru dropped this jam merging their roots and dub reggae sound with some of electronic synths and disco vibes that were running the clubs in NYC and around the world. At the time, the group was made up of one of their strongest lineups: Derek "Duckie" Simpson, Michael Rose, Sandra "Puma" Jones, and one of the top rhythm sections in reggae history, Sly Dunbar on drums and Robbie Shakespeare on bass.
On this episode of Subatomic Sound Radio, we have the man called Devon D, a driving force in the music industry in Jamaica for decades. Starting as an artist he went on to found People Records and released chart topping 45s during the 80s and 90s from artists like Dennis Brown, Ken Boothe, & Beenie Man. Finally he got into event production, video, film, and even writing and producing plays, penning and producing the hit "Brother Desmond".
He appeared on Summerstage last year, doing a cameo with Lee Scratch Perry & Dubblestandart. He kicks off the show with a wicked freestyle over a new release coming out in collaboratoin with his label and Subatomic Sound that features Elephant Man,"Vampires & Informers" over a riddim by Dubblestandart. I thought U-Roy was up in the studio when I heard Devon D hit the mic! Tune in. You are in for a treat.
In the second half of the show, we tip our hat to the LAMC (Latin Alternative Music Conference) with a ton of new Brazilian and other South American electronic vibes.
Subatomic Sound, the label behind the Brooklyn Radio show of the same name, dropped this vinyl exclusive last week in Europe. It finally made it's way to stores in the U.S. and Japan this week. New Yorkers, check for it at Halcyon in Brooklyn or get it throughout the US on the web from Zion's Gate and Ernie B.
On "Chrome Optimism", the iconic American filmmaker David Lynch and legendary Jamaican dub inventor Lee Scratch Perry appear in a summit of eccentric genius. Top ranking European dub outfit, Dubblestandart, provided the dubby musical foundation. Also, featured are excerpts from French electronic music pioneer Jean Michel Jarre's famous 70's composition Oxygene part 4 and dubstep and dub remixes from Bristol's RSD and NYC's Subatomic Sound System.
"I'm Richie Cunningham. And this is my wife, Oprah." Who did Christopher "Dudus" Coke, one of the biggest drug dealers in Jamaica, think he was fooling with this wig on? After a month long stand off with Kingston police, Coke was apprehended outside about 2 miles outside the city. According to kidult: "Last month, 76 people were killed in 4 days of gun battles when police and soldiers attempted to arrest Coke in Tivoli Gardens, a slum west of Kingston. Coke, the son of 1980s drug lord Lloyd Coke, could be charged in Jamaica in connection with the deaths of 2 policemen and a soldier killed during clashes." Emch of Subatomic Sound Radio has more info on the ordeal down in Jamaica. [kidult]
It's getting hot and sticky in NYC and breathing in this thick, humid air can start to feel a little bit like you are inside the iron lung. Don't worry, we've got a soundtrack for that! It all happens to synchronize nicely with a hot and heavy new release from the Subatomic Sound label: Dubblestandart meets David Lynch & Lee Scratch Perry "Chrome Optimism." Yes the American fillmaker and Jamaican dub inventor together on wax. It's a limited edition vinyl-only release that is already sold out of many stores, but fortunately for you, you can tune in digitally to some selections right here on Subatomic Sound Radio.
This edition of Subatomic Sound Radio features two tunes off the "Chrome Optimism" record that focus on the madness of dub innovator Lee Scratch Perry. "Deadly Funny" is an intergalactic time travel trip back in time to the Black Ark in Jamaica during the '70s via a futuristc Subatomic space ship and "I Do Voodoo" remixed by RSD in his extra heavy Bristol style. We've also got some other great unreleasesd exclusives from RSD on the show plus fresh cuts from the latest releases by Breakage w/Roots Manuva, Fort Knox Five, Quantic, and Nas & Damian Marley. Tune in!
On the topic of gangsters and politicians, the latest edition of Subatomic Sound Radio features an exclusive track "Vampires & Informers" by Jamaican dancehall king Elephant Man and Vienna's dub masters, Dubblestandart. It is forthcoming on a Subatomic Sound release next month, but current events called for putting it on the airwaves now. Allow me to expalin, after the cut.
If you have been watching the news you may have caught the story of riots and raids in Jamaica stemming from the U.S. demands for extradition of Dudus, one of Jamaica's top dons controlling the Tivoli Gardens area in Kingston. He's been brought up on charges of guns, drugs, and conspiracy. Not coincidentally, this neighborhood is the main constituency of the current prime minister, Bruce Golding, who is now leading the siege on a man many call "the President" and consider to be the reason Golding is in office. For more on the story in Jamaica, check this synopsis. And here is a fascinating video on the history of between the U.S., former JA Prime Minister, and Dudus' father known as the "don of dons" and "Jim Brown".
Also on the show, tons of bass heavy reggae, dub, tropical, dubstep, and more. We are debuting new tracks from the Chrome Optimism 12" with David Lynch & Lee Scratch Perry, Matt Shadetek's new album, my favorite tune from "Distant Relatives" (the new Nas & Damian Marley collaboration), tracks from the new Marcus Visionary double album, the new Quantic dub meets cumbia album, and smashers from Kanka, Jahtari and more. Get in there and listen!
At 6PM this Sunday, June 13th, get ready for BLUE: dinner, theater, aerial circus, and some Subatomic Sound System (who you know and love from their radio show here on Brooklyn Radio). It's going to be crazy. Basically, it's an underwater and aerial themed Cirque de Soleil meets De La Guarda type of vibe--put on by a mostly female circus from Brooklyn. They have a proper sushi chef on hand to serve up an aquatic themed menu. More info here.
They did it as RED on Valentine's day to massive fanfare and got a glowing story in The New York Times. It is very limited advance tickets only and you can get them here for $50 (covers the full night's performance, dinner, and drinks). If you are on Facebook, you can check out pics and videos here.
I first came across Barney Iller on $mall Change's Blackcrack vinyl fanatics email list. He posted a great jungle revival mix that was chock full of my favorite jungle cuts from the '90s. Since then I've learned that he is into all kind of sounds, most recently collaborating with my man Geko Jones of Dutty Artz/Que Bajo and getting deep into the electro tropical movement. That's what this mix is all about, from reggaton to glitched out cumbia, the Caribbean to South America and back again to NYC to tie it all together. Check it out and take notes.
[Ed. Note: You must read this post with air horn sirens blaring in the background after reaching the period of a sentence.] Coming to you from the streets of Kingston, Jamaica, with hot out of the studio heat from last night's recording session with Anthony B. Plus a sneak preview of material from the new collaborative 12" dropping next month featuring filmmaker David Lynch and dub inventor Lee "Scratch" Perry entitled "Chrome Optimism". MADDD!!!! Also, a forthcoming Subatomic Sound System dubstep remix of Noble Society's "Mama So Divine."
This is the sound of right now! Tons of new music coming at you with enough bass to snap your head back and knock any dibby dibby, tinpan sound on their can. The show kicks off with a past to future time warp featuring none other than the mighty Jamaican chatting originator, U-Roy, teamed up with electronic producer Dub Gabriel and remixed in a dubstep style by Ming (of Ming & FS) and yours truly, Subatomic Sound System. You can get this tune as a free promo download here.
It's off a new release called "Luv 'n Liv" that dropped last week that you should check here. Also check the funny bootleg video with old footage from the 1970s. (Note the two hippie white girls dancing in a sea of dreadlocks.)
If you didn't hit play yet, you're just wasting time.
DJ Emch of Subatomic Sound Radio was at Rose Live Music this past Saturday in Williamsburg, Brooklyn to do it dubby style with the Sound Liberation crew. They have a nice recap of the night in words and pictures over at their site. Go check it out. [SLF]
The event will also feature live dub and afrobeat vibes from Super Hi-Fi with some cameos from Emch and other guests. DJ sets will be thrown down by Q Mastah, Lil Tiger, and Linh. Bring your dancing shoes and be ready to have a great time!
That's right! It's the radio extravaganza the whole world has been waiting for... exclusive tracks, live show footage, interviews, and field recordings from the venues, clubs, airports, alleys, rooftops, and jungles around the country of India on the Planet Dub tour featuring Subatomic Sound System (NYC), Dubblestandart (Vienna), and some very special guests. There's more to the story and free mp3s of tracks featured on the show after the cut.
Right now I am in Bombay, India (aka Mumbai), where it’s 90 degrees and wild dogs, cows, and rickshaws are competing against people and taxis for space on the streets outside our hotel. This is one of the stops on the Subatomic Sound System and Dubblestandart “Planet Dub Tour” that is slowly spreading deep bass and echoes around the earth.
More words and flicks of Emch's tour through Asia after the cut. Get the latest episode here:
This is an interview we did with Brit Dubstep producer Rusko. (You can check out Part 1 and 2 here. There's also more video and live footage of Subatomic Sound at our YouTube channel. Never enough!) This one focuses specifically on the links between the original '70s Jamaican dub and the dubstep sound of the '00s that has been evolving in the UK and, now, worldwide. Part 3 is my personal favorite segment as we get a little more in depth and get some nice comparison listening for people who might not otherwise hear the connection in the concept.
The posting of part 3 of this interview coincides with the digital release of "Blackboard Jungle Vol.2 - Respect My Shit" from Lee Scratch Perry, Dubblestandart, Subatomic Sound System, and Jahdan Blakkamoore. It's some dark, wobbly dubstep based on Perry's original rootical dub classic "Blackboard Jungle."
DJ Emch of Subatomic Sound System on Brooklyn Radio (far right) gets his dub heavy with Dubblestandart in Vienna this past Thursday. Those crazy kids and their keytars will be in Bombay, India on the 17th--if youre in the hood!--and the island of Goa for New Year's Eve.
Ask yourself a question: Do you have what it takes to properly listen to this mix? For starters, come with your A-game subwoofers. The speaker phone option on your cell isn't impressing anyone. Don't step to this mix with that weak shit.
In the developing sound system culture of Jamaica during the ‘70s, your manhood was directly proportional to the size of your bass bins and the wattage of your amplifiers. If you fronted with weak sound, a rude bwoy might just decide to unload his firearm right in your pathetic little speakers.
They say the youth of today have an inflated sense of entitlement because so much is readily available to them, often times for free. Just because this mix is readily available, don't assume you are ready. Low frequency sound waves carry messages from the highest region. Be prepared to receive the gift.
This music was brought to you out of pure love--mixed and dubbed up. Debuting new material from Jahdan Blakkamoore's highly anticipated solo electronic release, Buzzrock Warrior, a new RSD and Lee Scratch Perry remix from Dubblestandart's Dubstep EP, slamming collabs from Mojo Morgan and Peter Tosh, Kode 9 remixes, and lots of deep dub bass from the roots reggae past to dubstep future.
Top NYC singjay, frequent Subatomic Sound System collaborator and Noble Society front man Jahdan Blakkamoore will be setting it off tonight in celebration of his new solo electronic album Buzzrock Warrior out on the Dutty Artz label. Dutty Artz crew Geko Jones and Matt Shadetek will be in the mix backing Jahdan in a live set, plus big DJ sets from Eddie Stats (Fader Mag, Ghetto Palms), DJ Rehka (Basement Bhangra), and Uproot Andy (Que Bajo) for a latin, caribbean, south asian collision of cumbia, reggae, bhangra, dubstep, and dancehall.
Some of you may have heard Jahdan Blakkamoore or seen him perform his "Blackboard Jungle" remix with Subatomic Sound System and Lee Scratch Perry at Central Park this Summer. Check the new Subatomic Sound Radio broadcast for a taste of Jahdan's new release.
