DJ Bruce Tantum, the host and resident selector for Brooklyn Radio’s Jerk!, has been involved in the downtown NYC music scene for a long-time – so long, in fact, that he and his no-wave minimalist-pop band Moot were regular fixtures at such long-defunct legendary venues as the Mudd Club, Danceteria and the Peppermint Lounge. The band’s spectacular non-success led Bruce to toss out his bass guitar and pick up the Technics; he soon began spinning a mix of oddball disco and early house. Since then, he’s played at pretty much every club, lounge and scuzzed-out basement and warehouse that the city has to offer, as well as in London, San Francisco, Chicago, Switzerland and Belgium. By day, Bruce can usually be found chained to his desk, toiling away as clubs editor for Time Out NY magazine.
Jerk!’s sound is a manifestation of Bruce’s long love affair with disco, house, techno, and clubbing. (At least, what he can remember of that love affair through his foggy, beer-drenched memory.)
