Wow. It's hot out there. How about some Latin heat to finish off the summer? Aaron Jerome's remix of Pete Rodriguez' "I Like It" gets all the female tails wagging, and not just the tanned kind. pump this up. Then turn your computer off and treat yourself to a margarita in place that plays the music too loud for conversation. Got a hot tip for a Throwback Classic? We've been loving everything on Big Boi's new album Sir Luscious Leftfoot. We're curious as to why it's getting no love from radio around these parts, being that it cracks harder and has catchier hooks, rhymes, and flows more futuristic than anything Drake or Nicki Minaj have put out. Their shit is lightweight. But the Lord works in mysterious ways, doesn't he! Here's another great track, "You Ain't No DJ." Do the shutterbug to it. [XXL]

Back in March when I spun at The Do Over in Miami I think the second or third record I played was one that a whole grip of people kind of flipped their wig about. It was an instrumental version of The Ambassador's "Ain't Got The Love (Of One Girl On My Mind)" which is probably best know to our generation as the basis of Pete Rock & C.L. Smooth's "I Got A Love." Yeah, Ambassadors is a hot record, and definitely a heavy piece, but c'mon son...the INSTRUMENTAL? ]]>
Interview with Brooklyn's Liondub /blog/subatomic-sound-radio-liondub-interivew/blog/subatomic-sound-radio-liondub-interivew 2010-09-02 09:00:00
On this episode of Subatomic Sound Radio, Emch interviews (and plays a stack of jams from) Liondub: Brooklyn based DJ, producer, and label head. Liondub has been in the game for a minute but since launching his own labels, Liondub International & Liondub 45, just over a year ago, he has made some major waves, dropping top ranking releases from Jahdan, Marcus Visionary, Ticklah and others that span dubstep, ragga jungle, drum and bass, and of course roots reggae.

Saturday, September 11 @ LOVE in NYC, Brooklyn Radio is sponsoring a event called SUB:SESSIONS "an education in low frequency vibrations". The sound system is one of the best in the city which is just what you need for the heavyweight lineup of bass obsessed producers including Brooklyn Radio's own Emch as well as Liondub, Matt Shadetek, & DJ Kiva. Plus controlling the mic will be Jahdan, Dub Poet Infinity, & special guest Spoek Mathambo. Don't miss it!

Wife Material always considered herself an 80s baby, but when brainstorming ideas for the latest episode of "I Love My Wife" with Tough Love, the 70s seemed to interesting a choice to ignore. Although many aspects of contemporary music are in adoration over the last two decades of the 20th century, some of the most provocative, groundbreaking, and foundational music that the women of "I Love My Wife" love today, was influenced by the 70s. With classic rock, jazz fusion, funk, and a whole bunch of other unclassifiable gems, there's a little bit of everything on "AM/FM."

Well, we at the The Shake Up also have reached a finale, the finale of AWESOME MUSIC WEEK. Of course we turned one week into 21 days [ed. note: In true DJ Chucky Brown fashion: A week in 21 days, folks. 21 days!], but we made it: classic house, funk-soul-disco, '80s part a, an intermission with dj dukes, '80s part b, and last but not least an all new ROCK awesome music show (with a couple of old tracks sneaking in). Enjoy, and let Dan Martino know how much you can't wait till the next "Awesome Music Week." [ed. note: We'll name it properly: "Awesome Music Month."

Earlier, we told you about a late '80s documentary on the Washington, DC funky go-go scene. Our Throwback Classic today is probably the most popular jam from that era and genre, Chuck Brown's "Bustin' Loose." Many people mistake it for the Godfather of Soul, James Brown. But if you're a keen listener--and we know you are, dear reader--there's a real difference in the drums JB used and the go-go style of multiple percussion. so it was 4:30 in the AM on a saturday night and you were in front of me w your fish tank. we kept looking at each other and I think your gorgeous. I was wearing a pink tank top and black jeans. You got off at myrtle-wyckoff.

Is the fish tank a new fauxhemian accessory we haven't been informed of? Who is crazier? The guy carrying a fish tank with him on the subway at 4:30 in the morning? Or the girl looking for him on Craigslist? It's a lonely world. [Craigslist]

Set times. Dates. Contracts. These are all things that are just written down for Axl Rose to ignore. Over the weekend, Axl brought his group of alien Guns N' Roses to Reading and Leeds, to play the U.K. festivals. Both nights, the band was kicked off stage eary for starting their set one hour too late. I love this guy. He just doesn't give two fucking chickens as to what happens. And the best part about it is, he really doesn't have to. People will sit there and wait for just one riff from Appetite For Destruction to come zinging out of the speakers. As the summer slips into the shade of September, I'm always brought back to the last weeks of August when I was a kid on vacation down in the Jersey Shore. Before it was a tacky paradise for MTV, it was a tacky vacation paradise for middle class families like mine. I remember waiting on line for the teetering pirate ship ride on the boardwalk as this song blared. Something about the salty ocean wind and this tune sailing through the air made it seem like the night held possibilities that I couldn't imagine yet. MGMT, "Congratulations" /blog/fresh-cuts-mgmt-congratulations/blog/fresh-cuts-mgmt-congratulations 2010-08-25 11:00:00
MGMT's latest album is a much more subdued affair than their debut, which sprang them into the national spotlight with its brightly colored electro pop. The video posted above, for their track "Congratulations," is rather somber. And the strange, dying alien walking with them through the dessert looks like he walked off the set of The Dark Chrystal.

Post-Orange Juice /blog/i-love-my-wife-post-orange-juice/blog/i-love-my-wife-post-orange-juice 2010-08-25 09:00:00
Orange Juice were a Scottish post-punk band founded in the middle class Glasgow suburb of Bearsden as the Nu-Sonics in 1976. Edwyn Collins formed the Nu-Sonics (named after a cheap brand of guitar) with his school-mate Alan Duncan and was subsequently joined by James Kirk and Steven Daly, who left a band called The Machetes.[1] The band became Orange Juice in 1979. They are best known for thehit ”Rip It Up”, which reached number 8 on the UK Singles Chart in February 1983, the band’s only UK Top 40 hit.
During a certain point this spring, I began to notice that many of the bands I enjoyed had aesthetic similarities to Orange Juice, most explicitly in the vocals. I tweeted the idea concerning Magic Bullets, who I think exhibit this more than any other group, and they responded…and agreed. And so I created this mini playlist with tracks by some contemporary bands and musicians who sound like they were influenced by the seminal post-punk band. Some additional examples, download link including Orange Juice’s largest hit, “Rip It Up":

This episode really sets the table for the next two episodes on the DJ, which will debut further along in the series. It explains the beginnings of some of the gang violence that changed the course of how Atlanta hip-hop culture evolved. The origins of Down By Law are discussed as well, as its impact on what was at one time a vibrant breakdancing and club scene.

Stories heard from: Tony MF Rock aka Woodchuck, DJ Applejac, Brian Lassiter, DJ Powerlord, H2O & DJ Jelly.
